Blood and Milk

Self Portrait

I don't have any behind the scenes shots, but I can talk a little bit about this one...

I had a frustrating day, so I thought I'd try and photograph and idea that I've had in my head for a while. I've been very much into the pale look lately... sort of striking, doll like, avant garde and dramatic. The white fluffy thing around my face is a big petticoat which my mother bought for me. And the blood under the eyes was done with fake scab makeup (essentially a red goo like substance which I usually use for SFX makeup) and a little bit of water. I added the blood because I wanted a contrast and a little bit of something ominous.

I feel like these photos could be translated a lot of different ways. And I usually don't like to explain how I translate my own photos, because I want people to form their own opinion on what the concept could be. So I guess I'll just leave it to the viewer.... translate it however you wish. ;)

This was my outlet for the day... and I did feel like it was a little easier to breathe after wards. But my over all frustration about... everything, always comes crawling back.

This photograph along with a couple others from this series may or may not be published in an upcoming issue of Giuseppina Magazine. But I'm not really sure and either way, it's probably a secret.. because the other photos wont be shown online until after the Magazine issue is out. ;) There is however, one other photo from this set which can be seen on my Redbubble and Facebook accounts (links on the right hand side).

I'll close with suggesting some music to listen to.. which has inspired me both while taking these photos and while editing them and it's thanks to a good friend of mine, that I discovered this amazing music.

Butterfly, Bird Shoot

Photobucket
Photobucket

I'm finally posting here again after much encouragement from others to start writing about my shoots. Here's my Butterfly, Bird shoot... because it's weird and I don't know what to call it!

A little bit of introduction....
This was a spontaneous, last minute shoot which we threw together. I worked with 2 of my best friends, Candy and Sara. Candy was the willing model. She hasn't done much modeling but I encouraged her to look into it more if she's interested because she impressed me with her patience and ability to take direction (2 important characteristics you need if you want to model). So perhaps we'll be seeing her on ModelMayhem in the near future. Sara who already has great taste in clothing and talent at doing makeup, acted as the makeup artist, stylist and general assistant. She also gave Candy some great direction during the shoot (because I zone out when I'm taking photos and forget to give direction sometimes). Sara sort of came up with the makeup on her own, with a little bit of suggestion from me (white face, black eyes and lips). We wanted it to sort of match the dress and look bird like. The butterflies in the hair were just random and we thought they looked neat. =P

For this shoot, it was all inspired by the dress seen in the photos. The dress was created by Victoria of Victoria's Bridal (I have yet to meet her, but she's a friend of Sara). Victoria saw some of my work and was kind enough to let us borrow some of her dresses. She creates custom designs and not so average wedding gowns. I knew as soon as my friend Sara showed the feathery dress to me I had to use it for something. So Sara and I went on a trip to Michael's craft store and picked up some feathers, butterflies and other fluffy, glittery cutesy things. And Sara had a seizure of excitement over everything in the store which was glittery. :)

We had a lot of fun and I realized it's quite rewarding to get to work with close friends on a shoot because it's so much more relaxed. With friends I don't have to worry about awkward silences or trying to appear more professional (of course I want to make a good impression when working with newcomers). I think this is the true meaning of "personal project" and that's exactly what I've told myself I'm going to do more of for now on.

Here are some behind the scenes shots (no editing):

Snap shot of what the bathroom counter looked like while Sara was doing makeup.

Yes, Sara is wearing a red wig. Why? Because she can.

Candy and I after the shoot. I make stupid faces.

Outrage in the Art Community

This AMAZING SFX/Gore/Horror Makeup artist is being CRIMINALLY CHARGED with "moral corruption". Yep. You didn't read that wrong. He lives in Canada and they want to put him in jail because his art is offensive and morally wrong.

Well guess what... so is a lot of other art in the world. So is some of my own art.
I'm absolutely shocked by this.... I thought it was the 21st century and everybody was becoming more open minded about freedom of expression. ESPECIALLY in a country like Canada. I expected better coming from them.

This poor guy might get put in jail because he's not afraid to push the envelope and challenge the viewer. Everything he does is fake and none of his models are harmed. In fact, I'm pretty sure they have fun doing it.

You can find his work and his journal regarding the issue on deviantart, but you can only view most of his work if you have a dA account:

I'm really disgusted by this. And I hope he is able to fight the legal battle because as far as I'm concerned, people who produce in your face art are more than entitled to have a place in the art world.

Rapists and Murderers should be put in jail, not artists.

Blue Goo - First blog post

Model is Viperjoe aka V Larsen
This was my second time working with her. And this is just one of five concepts we did. She really did shave her head for this, however it wasn't the first time she'd shaved it. I did the makeup. The blue goo is made out of honey mixed with blue food coloring. The blue liquid in the glass container is water with blue food coloring. This was a fun, messy shoot. And she was overcoming a fear of having things drip on her face.

This is my first Blogger post. I decided to make one to document my photo shoots. I will be posting new photos from new shoots. I will be posting behind the scenes images. And I will be explaining the processes behind the photos. Things like makeup, prop set up and any fun info about stuff that happened during the shoot. I've been told in the past I should set something like this up and I just never got around to it until now.
